Search the official Safety Gate portal when the screenshot describes a dangerous non-food product, risk and corrective or preventive measure. Compare the notification reference, reporting country, product category, brand, model, type or barcode, photographs, risk, date and measure.
Regulation (EU) 2023/988, the General Product Safety Regulation, provides the current legal framework for the Safety Gate Rapid Alert System and Portal. The notification must still be read literally. It may record a recall, withdrawal, sales ban, warning, destruction, rejection at the border or another measure, taken by an authority or economic operator in a stated context.
Safety Gate answers “what alert was published?” It does not automatically answer whether this seller holds the affected batch, whether a measure has changed since publication, or what another Member State will require.
ICSMS: look for the surveillance object and participating authority
The ICSMS public application is the relevant starting point when the screenshot or reference points to a market-surveillance product record rather than a rapid dangerous-product alert. ICSMS supports authorities’ information exchange and cooperation; public information may help identify a product, authority or surveillance context.
Do not assume that every internal authority field is public or that absence from a public search proves there is no case. Record the search terms, date, filters and returned identifiers. If the product record is found, preserve its exact status and authority rather than translating it into “EU recall.”
ICSMS answers “what surveillance information is available through this system?” It may not answer the live enforcement status, confidential evidence or the instruction applicable to one business.
National authority: find the owner of the live decision
When the question concerns an active inspection, local sales restriction, corrective action, appeal, notification method or official instruction, identify the competent national authority. The Commission maintains market-surveillance organisation and contact information, but competence still depends on product sector and country.
Send the authority a controlled record: company role, product identifiers, official database references, markets, notice received, current stock facts and the exact question. Do not ask “is this screenshot real?” after the matching work has already established more precise issues.
The authority answers “what does the responsible body require or confirm for this case?” Its response should be preserved with sender, date, scope and any case number. It should not be generalized to every EU country or product variant.
